Tom Baker

I began my teaching practice with the Friends Teacher Preparation Program and was a teacher candidate in the science department at Friends Middle School. Most recently, I was a middle school STEM teacher at Longs Peak Middle School in Longmont where I led teaching in 7th and 8th grade science and developed the curriculum in their business-focused elective and 6th grade intervention class. I earned my BS in Advertising and Public Relations from Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY and I’m currently working towards my Master’s in Learning, Development and Family Sciences from the University of Colorado Denver. In my spare time I enjoy trail running, paddle boarding, watching movies, listening to podcasts, rock climbing, cooking, and playing board games.

My philosophy in teaching is centered around creating a safe, welcoming, and fun learning community where students feel encouraged to take intellectual risks, challenge ideas critically, and seek well-informed conclusions; helping them navigate today’s information-rich world with not only rigor, but empathy and understanding. Our learners don’t need be to told what to think, I believe they need to learn how to think so they can decipher the near-infinite content competing for their attention. My hope is learners become critically engaged and thoughtful members of society, consciously making decisions that will lead them to a life of fulfillment and compassion, with the grit to pursue any goal that they set their sights on while embracing any failure and challenges that may come their way.

Challenging minds. Nurturing spirits. Honoring individuality.
