by Honor Taft, Head of School
There is nothing quite like the opening week of school. The nervous excitement abounds, with some students beginning their journey in a whole new school and everyone arriving a little older and more mature than the year before. Some students carefully plan their outfits and others arrive as if it was just another day. I often wonder if that nonchalance is real or if it is just another way of navigating nerves.
Over the last couple of days I visited with students in all our programs and was fortunate to see our teachers in action. Building community and connection is a top priority as we set the stage for a year of learning, growth, and risk-taking. For our youngest children, the next big step may be successfully separating without tears and this is big and real. For our older students, they will be leaning into academic activities that stretch their current abilities. Whatever age, our student’s next steps will require trusting their teachers and community. We often talk about the value of “going slowly so that we can go fast” because, as we have experienced time and time again, building a strong foundation is key in helping our students soar.
On Wednesday, I had the chance to join several elementary morning meetings and participate in introductions. When it was my turn to introduce myself and what I do, several students nodded with wide-eyed understanding of my job and so I asked them to explain what I do. Their answers varied as they pieced together a kind of job description based on things they have observed, heard, or some things they know from a story or a movie. The role of Head of School can sometimes be a bit murky so I will share what I said to our students about my role here. My job at Friends School is to make sure that our whole community has a clear understanding of what we are trying to achieve – of the goal we are working towards – and how we are working together to reach that goal. I assure that we keep our eyes constantly on our mission, vision and values as the North Star that guides all of our decisions.
As we embark on this new school year, I am reminded of the profound responsibility and privilege that comes with being part of this vibrant community. The opening week is just the beginning of a journey that will be filled with growth, challenges, and countless moments of joy. My role, as Head of School, is to ensure that we are all aligned in our vision—to challenge minds, nurture spirits, and honor individuality. Together, we will build on the strong foundation we are setting now, creating an environment where every student can thrive. Let’s embrace this year with enthusiasm, curiosity, and a shared commitment to our mission, knowing that each step we take brings us closer to our collective goals.
Here’s to a year of learning, growth, and meaningful connections at Friends School.
